The Galway Observer, 28th October 1922

Introduction

The erection of a monument worthy of his sacrifice has been undertaken by those who were associated with the late Father Michael Griffin, C.C., Galway, who was about midnight on Sunday, November 14, 1920 was decoyed from his home and murdered.

Recent disclosures says the appeal, have established that he was captured by Crown forces in the vain hope of extracting from him information which he would not or could not give. As Father Griffin did not turn informer he was brutally murdered. He was shot through the brain and buried on Monday night.

Body Buried in a Bog

On the following Saturday night his body was found buried in a bog in a wild and lonely spot four miles from Galway.

It is explained that wile the reign of terror prevailed no definite action could be taken. The men who murdered him or their associates, would scarcely hesitate to desecrate or destroy his tomb. But thank God, that evil time has disappeared.

Father Griffin was a priest of Clonfert, but with the kind permission of his Bishop, his priestly services were given to Galway. Any member of the following committee, which is representative of both dioceses, will greatly receive and acknowledge subscriptions: — Most Rev Thomas O'Dea, Mount St Mary's Galway; Most Rev Thomas O'Doherty, St Brendan's Loughrea; Very Rev P Canon Davis, Rahoon, Galway; Very Rev John Heagney, Adm; Loughrea; Very Rev John W.
