Cholera in LoughreaJames Hardiman Burke

The inhabitants of Loughrea were completely panic struck on the first appearance of Cholera amongst them, so much so, that were it not for the great exertions of the above very active and efficient magistrate, the dead would have remained unburied. He was to be seen every place, without showing the least temerity or dread, by his presence, to allay fear, and by the weight of his influence, keep down any disposition to riot or confusion, as some of the patients' friends evinced a parallel inclination to their removal to Hospital. Not satisfied even with this, he dispatched his own car and horse to Galway, and brought a sufficient number of men to Loughrea to perform the office of interment. Loughrea, we understand, wears the appearance of a Town that was once ???? Business is totally at a stand, and the more respectable portion of the inhabitants have fled, and we fear that the effects of this frightful disease will be long felt by the inhabitants. Cholera is getting into the country, and in the neighbourhood of St. Clerans some very bad cases have occurred. The accounts from Loughrea up to yesterday are of a favourable nature. We trust it may be permanent.

(Extract of a Private Letter from Dublin.)
The Cholera is worse here than ever it was ; 2 and 300 cases daily, and deaths equal in proportion. All the Hospitals are again opened, and every moment presents to our view a Cholera chair or a funeral. It is melancholy to reflect that persons who are to—day in perfect health, when you rise next morning you hear they are buried. I have seen myself, in passing through the city, several persons take it in the street. The Doctors are behaving most manfully in endeavouring to persuade the people of the danger there is in drinking ardent spirits, which, I am sorry to say, they still persist in doing.
