Barbarism of Black and Tans at Gort Recalled

The Galway Observer, 18th March, 1922

Gort R.I.C. Barracks have been occupied by I.R.A.. The Barracks is one of the largest in the county, and had a garrison of over 100 police and 50 soldiers.

The furniture of D.I. Blake, shot in the Ballyturn ambush, as well as the bullet—riddled clothes of his wife and himself, are lying unclaimed at the barracks.

In this barracks the brothers Loughnane were beaten before being tied behind the lorry and dragged along the road towards Galway, and from there the lorries left for Galway when Mrs Quinn was shot at Kiltartan.
