Big Cork Ambush

Galway Observer, 27th November, 1920

An auxiliary policeman was shot dead near Leap Co Cork, on Sunday. Another policeman was wounded. The dead constable's name is Jays and his command's is Mills. Two civilians are reported to have been killed in this ambush. Constable Mills was removed to the military hospital in a critical condition.

Amongst the other shooting incidents in the provinces is the shooting of Capt Thompson, of the Manchester Regiment, who was found in a field near Ballincollig, an important military station outside Cork city. At the same time and place two officers of the Auxiliary R.I.C. force, who hired a motor car to go to Cork a week ago have not been heard of since.

At Rush and Skerries other shootings took place. A lorry with uniformed men drove up to the house of Patk Matthew, D.C., Skerries. When they entered they asked was he a Sinn Feinner. He said he was a Labour representative. They then opened fire on Mr Matthews in presence of his wife and child, who were standing behind him at the time. Several shots took effect and he died shortly afterwards.
