Galway's Jail May be Cathedral Finance Committee are Told

The Galway Observer, Saturday, March 2nd, 1940

That the Galway Jail, to be handed over to the County Council might be demolished and a new Cathedral erected on site was stated at the weekly meeting of the Co. Council's Finance Committee on Saturday, Mr. J. J. Cunningham presiding.

The County Secretary (C. I. Ua Flainn, F.L.A.A.) said that the Council had been informed by the Department of Justice that the Galway Jail was soon being handed over to them. There were four houses attached to the jail which would be handed over with the other buildings. One of the houses was occupied by a tenant and he had applications for the tenancy of the others. He understood that Most Rev Dr Browne, Bishop of Galway, intended to make an offer to buy the jail and build a Cathedral on the site when it would be handed over. In that case, the houses would be demolished, and he would recommend that the question of letting the houses for the coming year be adjourned.

The Committee agreed.
