The Tuam Herald, Saturday, February 1, 1919.
TheDe Clifford Estate at Shrule has been purchased by the Cooperated Districts Board and the distribution of the lands amongst the tenantry may be expected at any moment.
These lands comprise the lands of Shrule grove, containing 214 acres, 3 roods and 39 perches; Joyce's Park, containing 395 acres and 32 perches; Corillaue, continuing 248 acres and 30 perches, and Bellanagurraun, containing 531 acres and 23 perches. They are all situated in the barony of Clare and Co. Galway.
The house division has been given to the Chinese Mission Fathers. It is a beautiful structure, built in the early part of the nineteenth century by one of the once important family of Kirwan who were connected with the leading families in the two counties.
About the Famine time the place was purchased by Lord De Clifford — one of the Russell family — and the recent owner lived there up to his sad death. His death was the result of a motor accident in which he gallantly lost his life trying to save an old man who was on the road with his cart, so he died a victim to his kindly nature. The trustees who are selling the estate of the Rigbt Hon. Jack Southwell Baron De Clifford areEvelyn, Lady De Clifford (nowEvelyn Victoria Ann Stock, wife of Arthur Boy Stock) Laurence Cavid and Cyril Eade, trustees.
