Clancarty Estate, Ballinasloe

Galway Pilot and Vindicator, 1905.

Ballinasloe, Saturday — The Earl of Clancarty on Friday met the representatives of the tenants of what is known as his Ballinasloe property at Hayden's Hotel. Father Kelly, Adm., chairman of the Estates Committee, presided. Previous to the general meeting of this committee there was a long conference between Lord Clancarty and his solicitor and Father Kelly and Mr. M. A. Hayden, the tenant's solicitor, the conference lasting over an hour. The proceedings were private, but it is stated that Lord Clancarty agreed to give up all the bogs except what is required for Garbally Court and farmhouse. He agreed to sell all the grass farms that he was entitled to sell. The game rights were reserved to him with that undertaking. The prices, as stated by Father Kelly, are 19 ½ years purchase of first term rents, 21 years purchase of non—judicial rents, and 22 ½ years purchase of second term rents. The abatement made by Lord Clancarty is 7s in £ reduction on first term rents, and 5s in the £ on second term rents. This in one shilling all round advance on previous offer of the tenants. The grass farms will be divided to enlarge small holdings and the bog will be absolutely the property of the tenants. The previous offers as to arrears, etc. are to stand. There are only two large grass farms to be divided. The sale will be through the Estates Commissioners. Lord Clancarty is to buy back the demesne where he intends to reside.
