Haw Haw Reburial Tomorrow
Connaucht Tribune, August 20th, 1976.
The remains of William Joyce 'Lord Haw Haw' will be reburied at the New Cemetery, Bohermore, Galway tomorrow afternoon. His family have indicated that they would like the reburial to be a private affair.
The remains are being flown from Heathrow Airport, London to Dublin either later today or early tomorrow and the burial will take place in Galway at 2.30. There may be a short service before burial.
Earlier this year the British Home Office granted Mrs. Heather Iandolo, Joyce's daughter, permission to have the remains exhumed from Wandsworth Prison, London where he had been executed for treason 30 years ago.
An application for permission to rebury the remains was subsequently lodged with Galway Corporation by Mrs. Iandolo and the final arrangements were made. Mrs. Iandolo has repeatedly asked that the reburial be carried out privately in as dignified a manner as possible.
In 1939 William Joyce began his radio career on Radio Hamburg which was to earn him the title of 'Lord Haw Haw'. He adopted a terribly British accent broadcasting Nazi propaganda and his chilling 'Germany Calling, Germany Calling' introduction struck fear into homes throughout Britain during the war.
Ironically it was his distinctive voice which led to his capture after the war. He was arrested when a group of British officers recognized his voice during a conversation in Denmark.
Brought back to Britain, he was placed on trial for treason and sentenced to hang. He was hanged at Wandsworth Prison on January 3, 1946.
