Houses Raided for Arms — Police and Military Search in Tuam
Tuam Herald, Saturday, September 4, 1920.
There was a big police and military scoop on houses in Tuam last Tuesday morning when a party of four police and four military, with rifles and bayonsts, searched a number of houses. The places searched were — Messrs. M. Cooney and M. Cooley (Tullinadaly Road), Mrs. McGarry's (McHale Terrace, where Mr. J. J. Coakley was searched), Mr. Daniel Bones, Shop Street (an invalid for the past two years), Mr. Pat Stafford, Chemist, from whom a gun was taken. Two fowling guns were taken from Dr. Costello, who invited the party in to pursue their examination, but the invitation was declined. The workhouse was also raided, and a long search made in the Master's apartment and the tramps room. The Master gave up an old disused single—barrel gun. The house of Mr. Jas Moloney, Dublin Road, was examined for fully half—an—hour, and some papers (stated to be of no consequence) were taken. Professor Whelehan's house was also visited, but nothing taken away
The police did the searching whilst the military kept guard outside.
