Dr. Mannix and Tuam
The Tuam Herald, Saturday, August 21, 1920.
A peculiar and pathetic incident connects Dr. Mannix with Tuam. He succeeded in the Archiepiscopal see of Melbourne an old Professor at St. Jarlath's and former Bishop of Galway — a prelate born within ten miles of Tuam and educated here — the Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Carr. On the occasion of Dr. Mannix's consecration the sermon was by request preached by the late Archbishop of Tuam, the late Most Rev. Dr. Healy. It was his last public pulpit performance and was not up to his other superb oratorical efforts. It sadly showed the first signs of failure to the regret of all who heard him and know what Dr. Healy could and did do. He was conscious himself of the act and declared that it should be as it was his 1st appearance on great occasions as a preacher. And a still further close tie with Tuam, Dr. Mannix was one of the most distinguished Presidents of our great national Eclestastical College and a professor there all his active life, and during his residence in college he was a special and particular fried of his collegiate colleague, the present of Tuam, Dr. Gilmartin.
