Remembered "The Big Wind"
Connacht Tribune, January 11, 1930.
By the death of Mr. Thomas Porter, of Sbra, the district loses one of the oldest and most remarkable parishioners. Born in 1831, the late Mr. Porter was about nine years old the night of the "Big Wind", the nineteenth anniversary of which fell on Twelfth Night. He could relate harrowing tales of the great famine of '47—48, and took an active part in the land agitation from its inception to its victorious conclusion. He was a most interesting personality of the old school.
